Pregnancy trimesters - What is important at each stage?

The pregnancy journey is a wonderful time, full of changes for both the baby and the mother. Each trimester brings its own challenges and joys, so it is important to know what is happening each week and how to prepare for what is coming.

First Trimester (1–12 weeks)

Baby development:

  • 1–4 weeks: The baby begins to form and grow. It is very small – only a few millimeters in size. During this period, the most important organs develop, such as the heart, brain, and spine. Although there are no visible external changes yet, the baby is growing rapidly.
  • 5–8 weeks: The baby's heart starts beating, and fingers and nails are forming. The baby is still very small, but its shapes are becoming clearer.
  • 9–12 weeks: The baby's face begins to form, with the contours of the nose, eyes, and ears starting to appear. The baby begins to move, but these movements are not yet felt.

Mother's body changes:

  • The first trimester can be accompanied by various unpleasant symptoms – nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness. This is completely natural as the body begins to adapt to pregnancy. It is important to allow yourself to rest and take care of yourself.
  • Most women begin to feel that their belly is slightly bloated, but it is not yet large.
  • You need to drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet to maintain good health.

Experts advise:

  • The first trimester is a period when it is very important to consult a doctor about the first pregnancy tests. Check the folic acid level in the body, as it helps prevent fetal nervous system defects.
  • Try to avoid stress and intense physical exertion, as the body undergoes many hormonal changes.

Second Trimester (Weeks 13–26)

Baby development:

  • Weeks 13–16: The baby begins to grow and develop movement, but the mother does not feel them yet. Skin and muscles are developing. The baby now already resembles a small human, and its body proportions begin to become balanced.
  • Weeks 17–20: The baby begins to move more actively, so the mother can start to feel the first movements. At this time, the baby's heart and lungs are already functioning.
  • Weeks 21–26: The baby begins to grow rapidly and gains more body fat, which helps keep it warm and protected from external influences. The mother may notice that the belly starts to grow more noticeably, and the baby's movements become more active.

Mother's body changes:

  • The second trimester is a happy period because many unpleasant pregnancy symptoms, such as nausea, pass, and energy levels begin to rise. Often at this time, the mother feels less tired and can enjoy the pregnancy.
  • The belly grows, but most women can still feel comfortable and move actively.

Experts advise:

  • Perform an ultrasound examination (Weeks 20–24) to check the baby's development, fetal heartbeat, and other important indicators.
  • During this period, it is important to devote time to psychological and emotional well-being. Take care of yourself and allow yourself to relax.

Third Trimester (Weeks 27–40)

Baby development:

  • Weeks 27–32: The baby grows rapidly and begins to gain more body fat. Its movements become more intense and frequent. The baby starts preparing for birth – lowering its head down, getting ready for delivery.
  • Weeks 33–36: The baby's body size reaches impressive dimensions. The closer to birth, the less space remains in the belly, so discomfort and abdominal pressure may occur.
  • Weeks 37–40: The baby is fully developed and ready to be born. It may still slightly change position but is already prepared to meet the world.

Mother's body changes:

  • The third trimester is often the hardest – the belly becomes large, and various symptoms may appear, such as back pain, shortness of breath, swelling of the legs.
  • More and more attention should be paid to rest and preparation for childbirth.

Experts advise:

  • At this time, it is recommended to start preparing for childbirth – arrange a birth plan with your doctor, decide where you will give birth, and consider pain management options.
  • Don't forget to prepare the layette – take care of essential baby items (bedding, diapers, onesies, blankets, clothes) to get ready quickly and smoothly.

The pregnancy journey is full of wonderful and challenging moments. Each trimester brings important stages of baby development and changes in the mother's body. By observing these changes and taking proper care of yourself, you can welcome your little one prepared and strong. Always consult your doctor and monitor your pregnancy progress – this will help ensure a healthy and safe arrival of your baby into the world.
